Derby Ramblers' chairman has never been shy about big promises, but this one is bigger than most: a January "war chest," his word, aimed at signings that would meaningfully change the second half of the club's season. The trouble, according to two people close to the club's finances who weren't authorised to discuss them publicly, is that the numbers don't obviously support it — not without either a player sale of their own, or a level of owner investment beyond what he's previously been willing to commit.
It wouldn't be the first time a chairman's public promise outran what the boardroom could actually deliver. Supporters, scarred by past Januarys that produced loan deals instead of the marquee signings that were teased, are simultaneously hopeful and braced for disappointment — a familiar, uneasy mix for a fanbase that's watched this exact pattern before.
"I understand why people are sceptical," the chairman said, addressing it directly for the first time this week. "All I'll say is: watch this window, and judge me on what actually happens, not on what's been promised before by other people at other times."
Whether January delivers the reinforcements he's promised, or another round of modest incomings dressed up as ambition, will say a great deal about how much credibility this chairman has left with a fanbase that's heard grand plans before.
