Connor Boyle works full-time at a sports shop in Glasgow, still lives five minutes from where he grew up, and has known Rhys Ramsbotham since before either of them could tie their own laces.

He has no interest in football beyond watching his best mate play, no opinions on tactics, and, by his own account, a standing rule that Rhys isn't allowed to talk about training when they're hanging out.

After Rhys's first-team debut for Glasgow Union this month, most of the questions in his post-match interview were about the step up. Rhys brought up Connor without being asked, laughing, saying he was the only person who'd texted him about his new boots looking stupid instead of how the debut felt.

It's a small story next to most of what's happening around Glasgow Union this season. Rhys says it might be the most important one in his own life right now.
