The Anchor sits four minutes' walk from Wolverhampton Heathens' training ground, and its landlord, Vernon Ackroyd, played non-league football himself for the best part of two decades before taking over the pub from his father.
In the last year, a small rotation of the club's younger players — U21 defender Toby Hesketh among the most regular — have taken to spending quiet evenings in the pub's back snug, mostly just talking.
Vern doesn't offer tactical advice, doesn't get involved in contracts, and has turned down, more than once, offers of payment from agents who'd like to know what gets said in there. Mostly, he says, he just listens.
It isn't a formal arrangement, isn't run through the club's welfare staff, and isn't likely to appear in any official programme. Several players say it's the most honest hour of their week regardless.
