Connor Cook is thirty-two, a first-team regular at Torquay Gulls, and by the club's own admission one of the most reliable players in the Alliance Semi-Pro tier. He is also, most days, out of the training ground gates before anyone's finished stretching.
His mother has advanced multiple sclerosis. His sister Bethan is her full-time carer, unpaid, and Connor's wages — modest even by Alliance Semi-Pro standards — are the household's main income alongside two part-time shifts he works most weeks at a local builders' merchant.
None of this is a secret exactly, but none of it has ever been asked about either. Connor missed a full session for the first time this season last week, covering for Bethan during a hospital appointment, and offered his manager nothing beyond “a family thing.”
It's the kind of story that rarely gets told about football at this level, mostly because nobody with a microphone is usually looking. Connor says that's fine by him. He didn't get into this for the attention.
